Can You Die Cast Stainless Steel?

There are many kinds of metal materials that can be used for die casting. Do you know that die-casting can be made of stainless steel?

If die casting stainless steel, the first thing you need to take into account is the possibility of die casting mould. If the melting temperature of molten steel and that of the mold material has no big difference, the mold under high temperature condition is difficult to bear the impact of steel with high temperature and high pressure, so the diecast parts will not keep any precision. In theory, all metals that can be turned into liquid can be molded into production, so iron and stainless steel are theoretically capable of die casting process. 

However, since the mold, material tube, melting cup, punch, soup ladle and the like which are contacted with molten metal in the production of die casting are steel materials, so high temperatures cannot be sustained, and therefore, the present color alloy die casting process is relatively mature. At present, before finding new materials to solve the mold material problem, it is not possible to stainless steel die cast. Most of the stainless steel precision die castings are now made by investment casting, for the cast parts with low roughness and size requirements sand casting is more suitable.

Investment casting is also known as lost wax casting. A suitable investment material such as paraffin wax is selected to make the investment mould. After repeating stick of refractory coating and sand, the shell is formed. The shell is to be hardened and then dried. After baking the wax inside of the shell is melted and only the cavity left. Roasting shell in order to obtain enough strength, and burn off the remnants of casting material. Pouring the needed metal material into the cavity, and the finished parts with high precision is obtained after cooling, shell removal and sand cleaning.
