Die steel is an important material for mold opening. At present, the most widely used aluminum die-casting die steel in China and abroad is martensitic secondary hardening steel, which is mainly used to precipitate the dispersion alloy carbide as the strengthening phase, which has high anti-tempering stability and thermal strength.

Here we introduce some kinds of mold steel which are used widely.

1. H13 .

The H13 steel of the AISI standard is the most used in the world with the largest amount of secondary hardened aluminum, and over 90% of the pressure casting mold is made of H13 steel. The steel has good thermal fatigue resistance and high toughness. After proper surface treatment, its service life can reach quite high level.

2. QRO series.

Sweden Bofors Co., LTD., based on H10 steel, has developed a new type of die cast steel QRO45, which has excellent anti-softening properties. In above 600 ℃, its high temperature strength is higher than H13 steel. After that, the Swedish Uddholm company developed QRO80M and QRO90Supreme die casting steel.

3. Martensitic aging steel.

Martensitic aging steel has good and strong toughness much better than H13 steel. It is an excellent material for large aluminum alloy die casting. In addition, martensitic aging steel has good process performance and welding property. Due to the high alloy content in martensitic aging steel, it is more expensive. Even so, for those moulds that need a long life, the cost of the steel to prolong the life of the die moulds is enough to offset the cost of the materials.

4. Cr-N Secondary Hardening Steel.

The high temperature strengthening mechanism of H13 steel and QRO90 supreme steel are all the secondary hardening effect of carbides, whereas in the US, the hot-working die steel Cr-N is enhanced by the solid solution strengthening of N and the precipitation strengthening of nitride. This steel is developed from low C and high Cr containing N steel, and 0.10% of N is added to the steel containing 11%Cr, in addition to the solid solution strengthening effect, it can also form nitride to enhance the abrasion resistance of the material.
