As we all know, die is an important element in die casting process. But what determines the quality of die? It is the steel material which is used to make dies. As the choice of die material, it involves some special requirements of die steel. 


Here, we would like to share with you some useful information to help you make the right decision when choosing the die steel.


For aluminum alloy die casting process, the die steel is asked to have these following main properties.


1. Good resistance to tempering and cold & hot fatigue resistance.

Because the die is to be under certain temperature for long time and to be used for large continuous production, it is necessary to keep its high hardness, and avoid the happening of mold adhesion and oxide skin. The surface of the diecast mold is subject to corrosion and oxidation of the molten metal over a long period of time, which also produces fine cracks; in most cases, thermal fatigue is the most important factor in determining the fatigue resistance of the die.


2. Good thermal conductivity. 

Under a constant high temperature like 600-700 ℃, aluminum alloy die casting die must have a good thermal conductivity in order to ensure other performances.


3. Sufficient strength, hardness, plasticity and heat resistance. 

Aluminum alloy die casting mould is subjected to high temperature, high pressure and thermal stress in molten metal injection. It is prone to deformation and even cracking. Therefore, the diecast mould steel should have sufficient high temperature strength and toughness in working temperature, as well as high hardness and heat resistance.


4.Good permeability and small deformation after heat treatment. 

No matter what kind of method is used for heat treatment, it is necessary to get a uniform hardness, so there requires good hardenability. It is particularly important for large size die casting molds to use die steel with small deformation after heat treatment 


5. Good resistance to molten metal damage. 

High temperature and high pressure die casting can produce obvious melting damage, so the mould should have great resistance to it. It should have appropriate oxidation mode, nitride layer and other protective layers, but no decarburization layer is allowed to appear.


When considering die steel’s selection, all these above properties should be taken into your account in order to make a qualified die and finally produce qualified aluminum die casting parts.
